Soramimi Visualizer

Gene Shinozaki

Capabilities

Soramimi—“mishearing” in Japanese—is a song written by Gene Shinozaki of the beatboxing duo SPIDERHORSE, for his Grand Beatbox Battle 2023 showcase in Tokyo. The song portrays the yearning of someone to hear the voice of a loved one, and unfolds over a duration of 10 minutes with a narrative structure akin to that of a short film, complete with a beginning, development, turning point, and conclusion.

Gene initially created 10 frames of poetic pencil drawings to accompany the song, which we enhanced with watercolors and animated. The resulting dreamy colorations and motions resonated with the melody and beats of the song, and was projected onto the stage’s entire backdrop during Gene’s performance.

Radiant collaboration with our acclaimed beatbox artists that moves two thousand hands and hearts

Beatboxing duo SPIDERHORSE was invited to perform at the 2022 Beat X Festival in Tokyo and Osaka, and requested motion graphics to accompany their performance.

We created an animated backdrop featuring the group’s visual character, “SPIDERHORSE,” to narrate over their performance and enhance the show’s atmosphere. SPIDERHORSE engaged the audience, encouraging them to raise their hands and clap, which they did—despite COVID protocols restricting audiences cheering and singing along.

Artist Shaun Leonardo’s 2021 outdoor installation “Between Four Freedoms” reinterpreted and celebrated Franklin D. Roosevelt’s seminal 1941 address calling for freedom of worship, freedom of speech, freedom from want, and freedom from fear. The interactive experience for the installation at Franklin D. Roosevelt Four Freedoms State Park redefines public engagement with art and social discourse.

Guided by Leonardo’s vision, our branding mirrors the project’s ethos, employing a brown color scheme evocative of human skin tones and the “Martin” typeface, inspired by the Memphis Sanitation Strike of 1968, to represent a message of non-violence and inclusivity. Leveraging innovative technology such as image recognition, we enabled visitors to engage with the artwork by scanning QR codes, launching the mobile website, and exploring workshop videos led by Leonardo. With over 25,000 images collected, the installation ensured accessibility and interactivity on both the Manhattan and Long Island City sides, inviting visitors to delve into the narratives of vulnerable communities and rediscover Roosevelt’s timeless call for freedom and dignity.

Poster House

At the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in New York, Poster House teamed up with PRINT magazine, Times Square Arts, and For Freedoms to launch a citywide public art campaign featuring PSAs and messages of love, gratitude, and solidarity with New York City’s frontline workers.

For this project, we produced uplifting poster designs around the theme of “New York Strong.” These can now be found throughout New York City on nearly 1,800 digital screens and billboards, thanks to partnerships with LinkNYC, JCDecaux, Silvercast, Pearl Media, and Times Square Arts.

Whiteness Project: Intersection of I at Storyscapes

Tribeca Film Festival

Created in collaboration with filmmaker Whitney Dow, this second installment of the Whiteness Project took form as a week-long interactive installation at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York. With a space designed by LOT-EK and audiovisuals by Arup, the Festival tasked Kudos with the project’s exhibition design.

In our resulting exhibition, audience members were photographed as they entered the space. Within seconds their skin tones were added to a color wheel arranged from dark to light, engaging them in questioning the perceived color of their skin and public perceptions of racial identity. The audience was then able to use a provided microphone to activate interviews by calling out the name of a person displayed on the grid.

Casa Bukian, Ubud Bali

Sandei Blinds

Located in the mountainous region of Bali, Casa Bukian is a luxury house owned by a well-known Indonesian actor and actress. This video project for Sandei Blinds focused on showing the brand’s importance as an integral element of the house’s interior design.

Our approach for the video production was to rely on sound and sight to reveal Sandei Blind’s brand message, while showcasing the company’s super-wide motor blinds, which offer remarkable coverage from the sun and magically disappear to reveal a stunning view of the rice terrace in the house’s backyard.

SPIDERHORSE Visual Identity System & Swag

SPIDERHORSE

Based out of New York City, SPIDERHORSE is an award-winning beatbox duo composed of Chris Celiz and Gene Shinozaki. The two have been creating music together for seven years and expanding the capabilities of the human voice in an innovative and exciting way. The group’s symbolic mascot—a character called Mr. SPIDERHORSE—and logotype were hand-drawn by ReepsOne, their artistic idol (who is also a beatboxer).

To develop SPIDERHORSE’s new identity, we digitized that original artwork and developed a complete visual branding system and supporting assets around it that work in various formats, including an animated version. We also designed and developed their new website. We used SPIDERHORSE as a versatile character to narratively accompany the group’s music; animated, he acts as the show’s MC, guiding the event and expressing the music’s mood. (He can even multiply his legs to double as a hair comb!)

We also enjoyed pushing the boundaries of SPIDERHORSE merchandise with unique materials and techniques, including hand-dyed T-shirts, wooden combs sourced from a local woodshop in Indonesia, bamboo-handled fans, and plush toys incorporating a plethora of pastel colors to reflect the group’s vibrant artistry.

Circular Branding & Website

Circular

Circular is an award-winning multidisciplinary practice combining sustainable architecture, interiors, digital media, branding, and experience design. KUDOS was tasked with developing a complete and cohesive branding system across all platforms for the company, encompassing logo, color palette, stationery set, publication materials, and website.

At the heart of our visual branding system are three shades of blue. Primarily featured in the logo, these colors were used to create a distinctive aesthetic and dynamic vibe that carries through the brand’s digital and print applications. The website’s overall design relies on large, compelling images optimized for fast-loading and optimal viewing across all platforms, ensuring a seamless and immersive user experience.
